Hot or Hott?

You have got to love the random things kids will ask you to get things off topic in class.  Today’s questions was: “is your fiancé hot or is he hott?”

Now you might wonder what was being discussed in class to elicit this sort of question.  Well, this was during my Western Civ class with sophomores.  We are studying the protestant reformation which happened in the 1500’s & 1600’s.  We were comparing teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, Lutheran Church, and Calvinist Church.  Most of my students come from a Calvinist church background.  They have lots of questions about the RCC.  One kid asked if it is OK for a Roman Catholic to marry someone who is not Roman Catholic.  From what I know, the church frowns on this.  Now, that is not to say that it doesn’t happen, but the Church itself is not really in favor of it.

Anyway, I did tell them that some people take that very seriously.  I once dated a guy who was Roman Catholic & his parents didn’t approve.  Funny thing was that I worked with him & his mom.  She was my boss.  We had to keep our dates kind of secretive b/c they wouldn’t allow us to date.  He knew he had to marry a Roman Catholic, so his mom wouldn’t even let him date non-roman Catholics.  (He had other issues besides this…like his mom kept his checkbook and even though he was a junior in college he only got $20 a week to spend…)

So after this brief story (which I didn’t share all the above with the kids) we went on to discuss other issues of difference.  Then a few minutes later this one kid raises his hand and asked if the Roman Catholic guy I dated was hot.  I told him he was (and he really was).  We go back to our other discussion.  A few more minutes later the same kid raises his hand and asks if my fiancé is hot or is he hott?  My answer???  Guess you’d have to ask my students!  By the way, they want to see a picture.  I’m thinking Larry ought to make a guest appearance soon!
