Compliment or Slam??

On Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s we have a half-hour long chapel service.  Honestly it is one of the highlights in my week.  Today’s was interesting for me.

1st of all…the chapel speaker was Rev. Archie Bauzin.  He is in his mid 70’s and is a chaplain at this old folks home in Crete, IL.  He used to be the pastor at one of our local CRC’s & that is where I know him from.  Seeing him up there speaking today brought me back to my HS graduation.  He was the commencement speaker.  I don’t recall much of that speech except…”because”.  He is one of those guys that likes to pick a phrase & revisit it a lot in his message.  He did that today (today’s phrase was “nip it in the bud” in response to what we are to do about sin).  Anyway, so I’m sitting there listening, but also being a bit nostalgic in thinking back to my HS days.  When chapel is over he’s standing by the door I exit from shaking hands.  He shakes my hand and asks me if I’m a “senior”.  I assume he means in HS & say, “Nope.  Actually I’m a teacher.”  He gets all red in the face & tells me that he’s glad I’m a teacher (nice save dude).

I go on to class & joke with my students about how that made my day.  Then I start to think about it…maybe he didn’t mean senior in HS…after all look where he works.  Maybe I should be all offended…he thinks I’m over 65!?  Naw, but I tell you it did cross my mind.  I was really tired this morning & I’m sure I didn’t look my 30 yrs of age.  My hair is up today and sometimes I think it looks a little old fashioned that way.  What can I say…these are the thoughts that went through my mind as I pondered this all…Hmmmmmmmmmm

  1. He might have been checking to make sure you're over 18. Dwell on that.

    And I'm dead.
