Summer Weekends...

Well, a good sign that it is summer is that we are not home much on the weekends. Last weekend we went to Kentucky to visit with Larry's family & it was really nice. We stayed one night @ Gigi & Papa's house - went to breakfast with them @ the gas station (I know...sounds pretty KY-esque, but the food was good and it was cheap!) They eat there most days & know everyone there & get teased by a lot of other folks. It is kind of fun to hang out with them on their turf!

We did have to drive down to KY - which was not what either Larry or I wanted to do, we prefer to fly there (1 1/2 hours in the plane versus at least 6 hours in the car...you do the math) but the weather was too dicey to allow us that luxury this time. Since we drove we took the time on the way back to explore a bit. Larry always sees the signs for Makers Mark Distillery when we pass by on the highway. Well this time we ventured forth to find it. It is WAY off the beaten path, but was a cool tour and Larry got to have his first real taste of moonshine - well he got two tastes - mine & his at the end of the tour. He also patronized their nifty store & got some Makers Mark mementos. Then we hit the road again and headed for home. It meant a longer trip, but the diversion along the way was fun.

While in KY we didn't do anything extra special except hang out with the family. We did some go-carting one afternoon & some golfing another day, but that is all sort of routine when down there. I got to hang out at the pool for a while with the girls & that was fun too - tried to get a little tan...figured that tan fat looks better than white fat, right?

As for this weekend, we're off to Chicago. Normally we stay in the Stephens' condo, but the keys are in KY, so we opted to get a hotel room near the condo so we can at least take advantage of the free parking pass that goes with the condo. We're staying at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel - got it thru Hotwire - looks pretty nice. It is just around the corner from the Hancock so parking will be a piece of cake.

The real reason for our trip up is Haley Cohen's 1st birthday party on Saturday. It is hard to believe that she's one already. We can't wait to see Haley & Katie & Mike. I went shopping yesterday for her birthday gift & I think I did well. We'll see. The funniest part about shopping yesterday was that I had to get a toy for our little man too. I saw this super cute airport play set by Step 2 (it is kind of like Fisher Price Little People stets) and I just couldn't leave it at the store. So our son already has his 1st airplane toy. Gee, I wonder how many more he'll get.
Well, today I'm off to earn my summer keep - I have a movie afternoon to attend with the American History Teachers Collaborative in Urbana. We watch movies - today about the Red Scare - learn about them and hear how we might be able to use them in a classroom & we get lunch & snacks & get paid $50 for the afternoon. Not too shabby!
